In 1995, the Alabama Legislature passed an act authorizing the District Attorneys across the State to establish a unit for the sole purpose of collecting unpaid fines, court costs and restitution. This authority includes collection of all traffic, district court, and circuit court cases that are not paid in full 90 days from the date of sentencing. The Restitution Recovery Unit emphasizes felony cases containing restitution orders in which the victim has not been compensated for damages to property or unpaid medical expenses.
